I feel a stronger vitality in squid after death, while I think of living squid as somehow technological beings. I eat the squid, receive its life, and am made to paint by the squid.

Artist Statement I paint squid using squid itself. This is not an act of mere consumption, but one of incorporation, transformation, and circulation—taking life into the body of the work and returning it as expression. I use squid ink and cuttlefish bone taken from bigfin reef squid and cuttlefish, refining them into sepia pigment and gofun made exclusively from squid-derived materials. The eye of a squid, alive in the sea, possesses a perfection that surpasses anything artificial; even after death, the eye retains an intense afterglow of life. Captivated by this sense of awe, I cannot help but eat squid, dream of squid, turn them into painting materials, and paint them. What humans need is not only the protein of squid, but also the suppleness and transparency they embody. Squid are not resources—they are lives, godlike beings that bring beauty and vitality into the world through nature. I gaze into the eyes of squid and am gazed back at in return. Sustained by squid, I continue to paint squid.
